New Bus Service Announced for Stewartby

Monday 20th September

Starting next week, residents of Stewartby will be enjoying a new and more frequent bus service – after Bedford Borough Council reached agreement with Grant Palmer for a new route to serve the village.

Earlier this year, the Council conducted a Rural Transport Review, which toured 51 locations throughout Bedford Borough to ask local residents what they would like to receive from their bus services.

Following this review, the Council contacted bus operators and has now reached agreement with Grant Palmer to provide a new service for the village. This bus service means more frequent services and free travel for under 16’s on Saturdays and during school holidays.

The new ‘number 68’ service begins on Monday 27th September. A timetable and further details on the route can be found at: http://www.bedford.gov.uk/transport_and_streets/public_transport/timetables_and_maps.aspx

As a result of this new agreement and to ensure local taxpayers’ money is being spent efficiently, the Council has therefore ended it’s subsidy of Stagecoach’s service which had served Stewartby, as part of its route between Bedford Borough and Leighton Buzzard.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Transport, said: “The Council currently spends around £900,000 per year on supported bus services and in these challenging economic times it is absolutely vital we ensure local taxpayers’ money is being spent efficiently.

“Our Rural Transport Review highlighted the frustrations of some of our residents in Stewartby and we have taken positive action to deliver the service they quite rightly expect. This is only the first development from that review and we hope to announce more changes in the near future which help meet the needs of our villages and rural areas

“I would like to thank Stagecoach for the excellent work in providing a bus service to Stewartby for the last five years and I look forward to working with Grant Palmer. I am sure they will deliver an excellent service for the people of Stewartby.”

Grant Palmer added: “I am delighted we have reached an agreement with Bedford Borough Council and will be able to provide a serviced tailored to the needs of people in Stewartby.

“We will be providing 10 services a day, each way, while under 16’s will travel for free on Saturdays and throughout the school holidays. I look forward to working for the people of Stewartby from next week.”
