Petitions Just Got 'E'asier

Tuesday 14th September 2010

Submitting petitions has just leapt into the 21st century and now it couldn’t be easier for citizens wishing to let the Council know their views. On 6th September 2010, the Council introduced a new online e-petitions facility, which enables members of the public to submit petitions electronically.

If sufficient signatures are received, the petition will go forward and be considered by the full Council.

By law, all Councils should have an e-petition system in place by 15th December 2010, but Bedford Borough Council want to be amongst the first Councils in the country to take the lead on the initiative.

Cllr Nick Charsley, portfolio holder for Rural and Corporate Affairs, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “The new system will make it easier for residents and hopefully encourage more use of the petitions system, which can only strengthen the democratic process in Bedford.”

For more information on e-petitions or to submit a request to start a petition please visit http://www.bedford.gov.uk/ and type in the search for ‘e-petitions’.
