Speed Match Your Potential Employers

Tuesday 14th September 2010

Bedford’s first ever speed matching event took place on Monday 13th September, at the Harpur Suite. The event adopted a ‘speed dating’ theme, and was introduced by the borough’s Connexions Service, in order to give young people a chance to chat to a range of possible employers. Both parties were just as eager to meet each other!

Each candidate was given a set amount time, three minutes, before they were moved on to talk to the next potential employer. There were 17 businesses who took part including such companies as Mecca Bingo, Home Link Property Services, NiTP, Go Gen, Develop EBP, SEETEC, Bedford Training Group, In Training, Sport Support and the Princes Trust.

A representative from each company explained what their company was like to work for, detailed what certain roles would entail, and provided general company information. In turn, the young person would outline what area of interest they had, what direction they felt their education was pointing them in, and stated any dreams and aspirations they had for their future.

Cllr David Sawyer, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It is an unusual setup in the sense that it is not everyday you get a chance to get so many potential employers in one room, face-to-face. The first steps after leaving college can feel uncertain, especially for those who have been out of work for a number of months, and in such economically challenging times. I think this event gave the young attendees a boost. They could see, in person, that there are businesses out there that are very interested in them, and they gained in confidence as a result.”

Each of the 18 young people that attended the event has had a minimum of two matches with either training providers, and or, employers that were present. Over the next few weeks the candidates will be meeting their matches again, for more in-depth discussions about the job and training vacancies on offer.

Feedback from all involved was very positive and requests were made to run another speed matching event in 2011.
