Bedford takes Gold at Anglia in Bloom!

After months of planting, pruning, preening and of course judging, Bedford Borough has once again come top of the class at Anglia in Bloom 2011!

At the awards ceremony in Colchester yesterday afternoon, Bedford in Bloom scooped the prestigious overall regional winner award as well as winning the large town/small city category and a gold award, for the fourth year in a row!

In addition to Bedford in Bloom’s success, various community ‘In Bloom’ groups also had reason to celebrate with the following awards:

• Queen’s Park (Urban Community) - Silver
• Kempston (Large Town) - Silver
• Turvey (Small Village) - Silver
• Brickhill (Urban Community) - Bronze
• Cauldwell & Kingsbrook (Urban Community) - Silver Gilt and overall category winner

The ‘In Bloom’ awards are one of the largest horticultural and environmental campaigns in Europe and are run by the Royal Horticultural Society. Anglia in Bloom operates alongside a number of other regional campaigns which feed into the national ‘Britain in Bloom’ competition.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved with Bedford in Bloom and the various ‘In Bloom’ community groups throughout Bedford Borough for another successful year.

“I know the Anglia in Bloom judges were particularly impressed with the level of community involvement on show throughout the borough and these awards are a fitting recognition of all the hard work which takes place behind the scenes to ensure Bedford Borough remains a great place to live, work and visit.

“I have said many times before that ‘In Bloom’ is not just about planting flowers - it provides a superb opportunity to bring local communities together to improve the area they live in and long may that continue.”

This Saturday (17th) will be Cauldwell & Kingsbrook in Bloom’s AGM to discuss future projects and residents are invited to this open meeting at the community rooms at Mile Road Allotments at 1pm.

Bedford in Bloom has also been entered in the national, Britain in Bloom competition. The results for that will be revealed on the 25th September.
