Stoptober 2013

‘Stoptober’ it’s like October, but without the cigarettes

After the success of last years launch, Stoptober is back, encouraging smokers all across the nation to throw out their cigarette packs for good. Stoptober is a 28-day national stop smoking challenge which research has shown makes smokers five times more likely to stop for good and last year, thousands of people successfully quit.

The national campaign will encourage the UK’s eight million smokers to sign up to Stoptober and as soon as they do will begin receiving as much (or as little) support as they want.  In Bedford Borough a service is offered to all smokers to meet with a trained advisor on a 1:1 basis at a local clinic. They can create a tailored quit plan including free advice, motivational support and pharmacotherapy. There are also many free support aids that will be available such as;

  • Access to a Stoptober stop smoking pack
  • A 28-day smartphone app, with daily updates and quitting advice
  • Text service for motivational pick-me-ups
  • Detailed tools and tips for coping, as well as support from fellow “Stoptober stop-smokers” via Social Media

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Portfolio Holder for Adult Services at Bedford Borough Council, said:” Research has shown that smokers can have even more success in giving up smoking as part of the Stoptober campaign so it’s great to see it back again this year. Smoking is the biggest cause of death and illness in the UK with more than 120,000 people dying every year through diseases associated with the unhealthy habit. It is also the biggest contributor to many serious and life-threatening diseases such as heart disease and lung cancer and not only affects your health but those around you through passive smoking.”

Giving up smoking increases your chances to live a longer and healthier life and former smokers can expect to see and feel a number of positive changes including:

  • Whiter teeth and a clearer complexion
  • Improved breathing and general fitness
  • Loss of the “smokers cough”
  • Reduced chance of a heart attack and stroke
  • Improved sense of taste and smell
