Welcome to Bedford Borough Council

Our Services A - Z :

LAC Awards

This year’s Looked After Children (LAC) Awards Ceremony took place on Friday 19th September at the University of Bedfordshire. The aim of the event is to celebrate the talents, achievements and successes of our children – those who are supported and cared for by Bedford Borough Council.

The theme was ‘Comic Book Stars V Pop Stars’ and 80+ children from across the borough, aged between 3 - 20 years old, all dressed to impress at the event out of the 125 nominated, ready to receive recognition for their individual achievements in:

  • Educational attendance
  • Educational achievement
  • Out of school activities
  • Sport
  • Life Events
  • Settling well into a new placement
  • Creative Arts (Dance, Drama, Music)
  • Improved behaviour

The event, which was sponsored and supported by many local businesses including FujiFilm and Dunster House, kicked-off with an energetic dance performance by ‘2step’. Bedford Borough Council would also like to thank the University of Bedfordshire for the venue and Concept Event Solutions for making it a glittering occasion with red carpet, backdrop, life-size Oscars, and specialist lighting.

Bedford Borough Council staff fundraised over £2,000 to put towards the awards ceremony with business contributing £800 in cash and far more in kind.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Executive Member for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Many children in care have had a tough life through no fault of their own and it is essential that we recognise and celebrate their determination to achieve against all odds.”

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “We take our role as Corporate Parent extremely seriously and all feel extremely proud of the 125 children and young people nominated for achievement awards.  Children and young people have displayed real strength and skill over the last 12 months through overcoming personal challenges, finding apprenticeship opportunities for themselves, developing music and drama skills, being selected for gifted and talented programmes or as County sports stars through to moving placements successfully and going on to university.”

Local sporting hero, Etienne Stott, (London 2012 Olympic Champion in the sport Canoe Slalom) wrote a letter of support, which stated: “I grew up in Bedford, went to school in Bedford and learnt to canoe in Bedford, so it is an honour to help to recognise the achievements of some people from my town. I've heard that 125 people have been nominated, and I have heard a little about what sort of attributes you have displayed to get here: overcoming adversity, staying on track despite pressure to veer off in a bad direction, displaying courage in the face of difficult choices and situations, coping with big changes in your lives and generally pushing yourselves in tough situations to be awesome people!”

Etienne Stott also had signed photographs couriered to the event for each of the young people to take home.

Again, the Council would like to thank all the parents, carers and support workers who attended to support the award winners, and to all the businesses, staff and elected members who have spent the last nine months fundraising and donating time, prizes and contacts to make this evening reflect the ideas of the Children in Care Council.
