VOLUNTEER FOR FINAL CLEAN-UP OF THE YEAR TO CELEBRATE WORLD RIVERS DAY
There is one last opportunity this year to
help take care of the river in Bedford on Saturday, 27
The final Rivercare event of 2014 is from 10am
– midday and will see volunteers from various local groups
including Bedford Sub-Aqua Club and the Viking Kayak Club, together
with the Environment Agency, back in the water. They will be
collecting litter from the riverbed with volunteers wanted to
support in clearing rubbish from the riverbank.
Previous events have seen many unusual items
collected including shopping trolleys, bicycles, a motor scooter,
tyres, signs, pieces of fencing and even a joint of pork!
Staff from McDonald’s will also be joining the
event by helping to pick litter and providing volunteers with
vouchers for free food. There will be an ‘all about our river’ quiz
for under-16s and face painting on the day.
The event will also mark World Rivers Day, an
international celebration of the world’s waterways, which is taking
place on the last Sunday in September. This day aims to highlight
the value of rivers and to increase public awareness of the need to
take better care of our waterways.
Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for
Community and Regulatory Services, said: “World Rivers Day is a
great event that really celebrates our waterways and highlights to
the community the environmental issues and pressures that our
beautiful rivers face. So why not show the Great Ouse some love and
support World Rivers Day by coming along to volunteer at this local
event and helping to tidy up the riverbank?”
