CHILDREN IN CARE COUNCIL – AWARDS CEREMONY

There are 250 young people in care in Bedford Borough. This September, the Children in Care Council (CiCC) held an awards ceremony at The University of Bedfordshire to celebrate the talents, achievements and successes of our children – those who are supported and cared for by Bedford Borough Council. In order to make it extra special, a host of celebrities supported the occasion.

A total of 166 nominees prepared to receive recognition for their individual achievements in:

  • Educational achievement
  • Personal achievements
  • Sport
  • Life Events
  • Settling well into a new placement
  • Creative Arts (Dance, Drama, Music)
  • Improved behaviour

There were 18 category winners, four outstanding winners and one outstanding winner in education.

At the ceremony, video messages were aired from Samantha Womack (actress in Eastenders) and Solomon Achtar (from the Apprentice). A “we support Bedford Borough CiCC” photo sent in from Bedford band Don Broco, was shown at the event with awards presented by local sporting hero, Matt Skelton.

Each year the awards ceremony has a theme. This year, the theme was ‘CiCCcraft’, a play on a popular computer game which was chosen due to the popularity of the game and the opportunities for creativity on the night with costumes, CiCCcraft boxes and a design your own t-shirt. The Children in Care Council (CiCC) planned and led the event from ideas from other children and young people in care collected over the year and have spent 6 months working together to create an incredible night for all who attended.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services at Bedford Borough Council said: “These children have accomplished some fantastic goals and we were delighted to be able to recognise their work.”

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hogdson, who attended the event, said: “We take our role as Corporate Parent extremely seriously and all feel extremely proud of the 166 children who secured an achievement award.”

CiCCcraft band performed on the day with ‘Music for Bedford Borough’.

Again, the Council would like to thank all the parents, carers and support workers who attended to support the award winners, and to all the businesses, staff and elected members who have spent the last nine months fundraising and donating time, prizes and contacts to make this evening reflect the ideas of the Children in Care Council.
