.Taking care of our Rivers; the RiverCare Clean-Up Event
comes to Queen’s Park!
A Bedford Borough RiverCare Clean-Up event
will be taking place on Saturday 26th September 2015 to coincide
with the internationally-celebrated World Rivers Day! World Rivers
Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 60 countries
across the globe every year.
The celebration, which is part of the United
Nation’s Water for Life initiative is especially important
for Bedford Borough, given the many rivers and waterways which flow
through our boundaries.
To mark the event, volunteers will meet at
10am at Queen’s Bridge in Queens Park, which is located on the
Slipe beside the Gurdwara and clean up the area, which is prone to
collecting rubbish. Everyone is welcome to come along and
litter pick along the river banks and pathways with the Community
The site has also been picked by Robert
Martyr, RiverCare & BeachCare Project Officer, who is
organising underwater filming of the rubbish located on the river
bed. The short film will show the public just what effect their
actions are having on the environment and namely, why littering is
so detrimental to our rivers.
In previous years bikes, pushchairs, cash
tills, a money safe and a moped have all been pulled out of Bedford
Borough’s River Great Ouse, showing just how much our waterways
have to contend with.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said
“We are all rightly proud of the River Great Ouse, but as a
community we also have a responsibility to take care of the river
and waterways for current and future generations.’
The RiverCare Clean-Up event is a great
initiative which gives us all a great opportunity to help maintain
the river now and for years to come. I’d encourage anyone able to
get involved to take part and help us clean our waterways!”
The Viking Kayak Club, Bedford Sub Aqua Club,
Bedford River Users Group and the Environment Agency will be
helping organise the event along with Green Space Officers, Street
Champions and members of the public who regularly help out at these
