Black History Month 2017

Black History Month 2017 at The Higgins Bedford

‘Sankofa: Bedfordshire’s Black History Uncovered’ exhibition opens Saturday 30th September.

This exhibition will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in the UK and explore Bedfordshire’s own Black History through the inspirational people within the African and Caribbean community.

There will be a programme of events and activities throughout October to compliment the Sankofa exhibition and celebrate Black History Month, including a debate, talks, workshops and an African and Caribbean Heritage Day on Saturday 28th October.

This Heritage Day will include an ‘up for debate’ section, with planned topics for discussion including the identity of ‘Black British’, and representation in the media.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “This exhibition and other events planned to celebrate Black History Month here in Bedford are a great opportunity to get involved in discussions about key issues such as identity and representation, and learn more about the heritage of the African and Caribbean community in the UK.”
