An £8.8million major regeneration of the Bedford Bus Station
area has taken an important step forward after planning permission
was granted on Monday night.
Bedford Bus Station is a vital gateway to the town centre and
has been in need of major improvements for decades. The planning
consent granted by Bedford Borough Council’s Planning Committee
enables the Council to start the tendering process with a projected
start on site programmed for early 2014.
The application was designed in partnership with bus station
owners Stagecoach. The proposal includes an attractive new bus
station building, with much improved facilities for passengers, a
new Travel and Tourism Centre, offering bus and train tickets as
well as a range of other services.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Bedford Bus
Station has for many years let our town centre down and is one of
the most common topics residents raise with me as I talk to people
across the Borough. We have therefore been determined to make
the new bus station and other improvements happen in defiance of
the economic climate, and are pleased to have both funding and now
the final planning consent in place.
“This is a major project for our town centre which will create a
brand new bus station building, vastly improved public toilets, new
shopfronts, refurbished multi-storey car park and a new surface car
park on Greyfriars.
“We will now move forward with this project to deliver a gateway
to Bedford town centre that the Borough deserves and that local
residents can actually take pride in.”
The planning consent granted on Monday night is an important step
forward in the plans to regenerate Bedford Bus Station. The £8.8
million major regeneration project also includes:
• Refurbishment of Allhallows multi-storey car park. Includes
major modernisation of the public toilets with improved disabled
and baby change facilities.
• New shopfronts, including new windows and doors which will
improve the appearance and disabled access to shops in Greenhill
Street, below the car park.
• Construction of new surface car park on Greyfriars
• Improvements on the north side of the bus station area, in
front of the car park, with new paving, seating and other
As planning permission has now been granted, the Council can
invite tenders for the new bus station building. Refurbishment of
the Allhallows car park and toilets are currently ongoing with an
anticipated start for the new bus station building early next
