Greyfriars Surface Car Park

First published - 2nd July 2013

Construction of a new surface car park at Greyfriars starts on Monday 8th July as the long awaited regeneration of the Bedford Bus Station area continues.

The new car park is part of the £8.8million regeneration of the Bedford Bus Station area and will provide a total of 142 spaces, including 7 disabled parking spaces which will increase the number of disabled parking spaces available in the bus station area.

The car park is expected to be open well in time for Christmas.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The new surface car park at Greyfriars will provide more parking in the heart of the town centre, and its construction is another key part of the regeneration of the bus station area.

“The refurbishment to Allhallows multi-storey car park and public toilets is already under way and planning permission has also been granted recently for the new bus station.  Bedford bus station has let our town down for far too long and we are pushing on with the brand new facility and regeneration of the area.  Work on the new bus station will be able to begin in early 2014 and will deliver vastly improved facilities for all users.

“The start of construction on the new surface car park is more welcome progress in the task of delivering a bus station area which residents can actually enjoy and take pride in, after so many years of waiting and hoping for much-needed regeneration.”

Neil Huntington, Regional Director at contractors Eurovia, added: “We are pleased to have been awarded the contract to deliver this new car park in Bedford town centre and we look forward to starting work shortly.”
