Union St junction Improvements

The junction is one of the busiest in the borough and is used by more than 28,000 vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists a day. It also has had the highest number of accidents involving cyclists in Bedford Borough in the last decade.

The improvements will make the junction safer for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers as well as maintaining the same number of vehicles.

The new roundabout involves:
- Changes to the road layout and lanes
- New lane markers
- New zebra crossings for pedestrians and cyclists on approach roads
- Pavement widening for ‘shared use’ by pedestrians and cyclists
- Lighting improvements
The new shape and presence of lane markers means that road users will be signposted to the correct lane as they approach and join the roundabout and then guided by line markings to their chosen exit.  This will also prevent potentially hazardous lane changes on the roundabout itself.

Further information on the scheme can be found on the menu on the left hand side
