Request

How many empty public buildings are under your control? And how many of them will you open up for the homeless to use this winter?

Response

The Council has a total of 38 vacant properties at present. All of these properties are temporarily vacant and will either be occupied for delivery of Council services or actively being marketed for letting to commercial tenants or sold because they have been declared surplus to requirements.

None of these are residential properties or suitable for being used as residential properties. However, Bedford Borough Council works in partnership with the Salvation Army to provide a night café which offers a warm, safe environment for those who would otherwise face a night on the streets when the overnight temperatures drop to zero or below.

In each of the last six years (back to 2009 when you became a unitary authority) on how many occasions did the council have to remove travellers from land?

For each of these occasions can you provide:

-How much did it cost the council?

Can you also provide how many people have been working in the department that deals with moving gypsies and travellers in each of those years and how much the budget for that department was for each?

Under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, the authority must state whether or not the information exists and I confirm that we do hold some of the information you requested.

Please find attached a breakdown of all the times that the Council commenced or completed legal action to remove travellers from its land.  Unless stated otherwise these actions all relate to Proceedings taken through the Magistrates Court by the Council under Section 77 and Section 78 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.  The Council only acts to remove travellers from land that it owns or controls.

We are not able to provide an individual cost for each action but we have been able to provide an annual cost for each year.  The exceptions to this are 2009 and 2010 where we do not hold the information.

How many of your buildings are currently unoccupied? And how many homeless children, women and men could be housed in them?
