EU Referendum

On Thursday 23 June 2016, a Referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union took place.

Voters were asked the question should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union.  Polling stations were open from 7am-10pm.

Jenny Watson (Chairman of the Electoral Commission), was the Chief Counting Officer (CCO) for the referendum and was responsible for the coordination of the referendum across the whole of the UK.  In the East of England Steve Packham (Chief Executive of Chelmsford Borough Council) was the Regional Counting Officer (RCO) and was responsible for the coordination of the referendum across that Region.  Philip Simpkins (Chief Executive of Bedford Borough  Council) was the Counting Officer (CO) for Bedford Borough and had responsibility for overseeing arrangements in the Borough of Bedford.

Counting of the votes cast in Bedford Borough took place at the John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre, Mile Road, Bedford on Thursday 23 June.  The CO made a declaration of votes cast in the Borough’s areas and the RCO made a declaration of the result for the Eastern Region.  The CCO then made a declaration for the whole of the UK.
