Domains of Deprivation 2015

In addition to the overall Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), the Indices of Deprivation 2015 also include rankings of each LSOA on the 7 deprivation themes (Domains) from which the IMD is calculated.

These Domains have different weightings in the IMD calculation; the 2 with the highest weighting are Income (22.5%) and Employment (22.5%) whereas Crime, for example, only contributes 9.3%.

Full details on the variables which are included in each of the 7 Domains (37 indicators in total) and how the Domains are weighted to form the IMD is available here

Two supplementary indices of the Income Domain have also been produced covering:

Finally, there is also a sub-domain of the Barriers to Housing and Services Domain.  This measures road distance to 4 key services - GP surgery, primary school, post office, and a general store or supermarket.  This measure, Geographical Barriers, largely identifies deprivation in rural areas. Since Bedford Borough has a large rural area, this explains why the highest level of deprivation in the Borough is on the Barriers to Housing and Services Domain (though this only has a small weighting of 9.3% in the IMD calculation).

Maps

Maps showing the location of the LSOAs falling within the 0-30% most deprived areas in England on five of the Domains are available below.

These maps are restricted to the urban area since almost all of the areas of 0-30% deprivation are located in Bedford or Kempston Towns.  Where there are areas of 0-30% deprivation in a rural ward, this is identified in the commentary which is provided on each map.

The areas of 0-30% deprivation are numbered on each map in order of deprivation, with 1 being the most deprived.

Maps are also available showing the location of the LSOAs in the urban area which fall within the 0-30% most deprived in England on the IDACI and IDAOPI indices.

A Borough-wide map of Geographical Barriers shows that, as would be expected, the majority of the LSOAs which are within the 0-30% most deprived areas in England on this indicator are in rural wards.
