Index of Multiple Deprivation 2015

How the IMD is Calculated

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) combines 37 social, economic and environmental indicators to produce an overall deprivation score for each Lower Super Output Area (LSOA).  There are 32,844 LSOAs in England and 103 in Bedford Borough, each averaging 1,600 people.

The IMD is calculated by weighting the 7 Domains of deprivation, for example Income has a weighting of 22.5% in the IMD, while Health is 13.5% and Crime is 9.3%.

The resulting scores are then ranked across the 32,844 LSOAs in England, with 1 being the most deprived area and 32,844 being the least deprived.

Particular attention is paid to those LSOAs which fall within the 0-10%, 10-20%, and 20-30% most deprived areas in England.

IMD Deprivation in Bedford Borough

Five LSOAs in the Borough are among the 0-10% most deprived areas nationally on the IMD.  A further nine LSOAs are among the 10-20% most deprived, and 11 among the 20-30% most deprived.

The 14 LSOAs in the Borough which fall within the 0-20% most deprived areas are listed in Figure 1, and the locations of the 25 LSOAs which are among the 0-30% most deprived are shown on this map.  All 25 of these LSOAS are in the urban area of Bedford and Kempston Towns.  A map of the IMD rankings in the Rural Area is also available.
