***************************** STOP PRESS ************************************

The Margaret Dennison Bursary will enable the Local Authority, in their role as Corporate Parents, to support Looked After Children to pursue a talent and unlock their potential. The fund will provide additional financial support to those who may flourish with specialist coaching, equipment, support and training in the following disciplines:

  • Music
  • Art
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Sports
  • Technology
  • Or a talent in another area

The fund will be open to all children and young people who are Looked After by Bedford Borough Council up to the age of 21 or 25 with SEND. Up to £150 can be requested from the bursary per child / young person per financial year.

To apply for consideration for a bursary, applicants can complete an online or paper form, or record a short video answering the questions giving details on the following:-

  • Type of activity to be funded
  • The commitment and dedication of the child or young person to developing their talent in this area
  • The difference this bursary will make
  • Whether they are receiving funding or allowances elsewhere to support this talent (this would not result in an automatic exemption)

Children, young people, carers and workers can make one application per financial year for consideration. Each application will need to be signed by the child / young person and a significant adult e.g. a carer, residential worker or social worker names as a referee. All funds must be spent on the child or young person and need to be used by the end of the financial year.  Receipts will need to be provided, plus feedback from the child, young person and carer as to the difference this fund has made.  Payment will be made by BACS directly to the carer.

Applications will be assessed by the bursary panel made up of the Lead Member for Children’s Services, the Head of Service for Looked After Provision and two members Children in Care Council then approved by the Corporate Parenting Partnership Group.

You can apply by email to cicc@bedford.gov.uk or post to Emma Sparrow, Bedford Borough Council, 5th Floor, Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford, MK42 9AP.
