Short Breaks Services Update: 07

Parents and Carers Share Their Knowledge

Bedford Borough Council is committed to the development of a Parent Participation Service to support and encourage parents and carers to get involved in the design and development of services for children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities, and their families.

The Parent Carer Forum, introduced earlier this year, acts as a ‘collective’ voice for parents with children and families with SEN and disabilities, and as the forums are parent led, their own priorities are set. The forum is set up so parents can get together and consider the care of this group of individuals within the age range of 0 -25.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Parent participation endorses positive working relationships between families and professionals, leading to greater understanding of shared challenges and promoting realistic expectations. It also assists in ensuring that resources are used appropriately in providing services which meet the needs of families.”

Bedford Borough Council, Luton, and Central Bedfordshire Council are actively supporting the development of the Parent Carer Forums. There will be significant partnership between the three separate forums, as well as identifying local issues.

Cllr Oliver added: “Any parent or carer of a disabled child, or child with Special Educational Needs, is entitled to be a member of the forum, and can be involved as much as they would like. Parents are best placed to share their knowledge with others, as they have in-depth experience gained from living through their situation and instinctively knowing what their child needs in order to thrive.”
