Moderation

Moderation helps teachers to be confident that they are applying accurate and consistent standards when making their teacher assessment judgements. It also helps to ensure the teacher assessment results are fair for pupils and useful for schools and others who evaluate performance and progress.

Monitoring visits help build confidence in the security of the national curriculum tests. They provide headteachers with a formal opportunity to demonstrate how the national curriculum tests are administered in their schools.

Part of the moderation process includes an appeals process that can be used by the moderated school if they wish to question the outcomes of the moderation.  A copy of our appeals procedure can be found here: Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Writing.

There are three types of moderation activities conducted by the local authority,

  • Moderation of the EYFS profile
  • Key Stage 1 moderation
  • Key Stage 2 writing moderation

The Standards and Testing Agency moderation arrangements for 2017 can be found here.
