Who are we

We are the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Team, which is part of the School Support Service for Bedford Borough Council. We perform two roles:

Education, Health and Care needs assessment:

Our team deals with requests for Education, Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessment. We explain how the process works and provide parents/carers/young people with information about services that can support them. If we agree to carry out an assessment, we will gather information about the child/young person from educational settings, parents and other professionals within agreed statutory timescales. When the assessment is complete, we will decide whether to write an Education, Health and Care plan for the child/young person.

Monitoring of Education, Health and Care plans:

Once an EHCP has been written and finalised it is our responsibility to monitor the  provision outlined on it, through the Annual Review process, the Annual Review meeting is held by the educational setting that the child attends.  To do this we regularly gather key relevant information about the child/young person’s needs and progress that will ensure statutory obligations are met.

We also have responsibility for the monitoring of pupils registered for Elective Home Education. Where a parent or carer is considering elective home education for their child, our team can provide guidance on what curriculum needs to be in place.
