Stray Dogs

With effect from the 1st April 2017 Bedford Borough Council will be working in partnership with Noah’s Ark Environmental Services who will be responsible for collecting any stray dogs found in the Borough.

Lost Dogs

Lost and stray dogs are dealt with by the Council, if you have lost your dog please contact the Council on (01234) 718099 during office hours  (8:45 - 17:15 Monday to Thursday, and 8:45 -16:45 on Fridays).  Details of lost dogs will be held on file and should a dog be found matching the description of your lost dog you will be contacted by the Council.  If you are calling the Council out of hours and at weekends please dial (01234) 267422 and an operator will assist you.

Noah’s Ark will upload pictures of lost dogs onto http://www.doglost.co.uk/ which you can also check.

Found Dogs

If you have found a stray dog  please ring the Council on (01234) 718099 and arrangements will be made to collect it from you. All stray dogs will be collected by the Dog Wardens from Noah’s Ark Environmental Services  .

Under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015 it is a legal requirement for owners to microchip their dogs and keep the registered details up to date.  For more information please click the following link 'Microchipping' or select the web page on the left hand menu.

If the dog is microchipped and/or is wearing a ID tag on its collar that has up-to-date owner contact information on it, then the Dog Warden will try to contact the registered owner to return the dog. They will be required to pay the council stray dog fees, statutory fee and any vets fees that may have been incurred. If this is unsuccessful or the dog is not wearing an ID tag and collar and is not microchipped, the dog will be taken to the Council’s contracted kennels, Forest Lodge Kennels, where they will be housed for a period of 8 clear days.

If the owner does not come forward within this time to claim their dog and pay the stray dog fees, and any vets fees that may have been incurred (as applicable) and the statutory fee incurred, the dog will become the property of the Council and Forest Lodge Kennels, and will be rehomed in accordance with the Councils and kennels procedure.

If your dog is not microchipped or if the registered keeper details are not up to date further action may be taken against you and/or a fine can be imposed.

Collecting your dog from kennels

Stray dogs collected from within Bedford Borough will be taken to Forest Lodge Kennels, Forest Road, Quinton, Northamptonshire, NN7 2EQ. Their telephone number is (01604) 862239 and email address is forestlodgekennels@gmail.com  Their operating hours are Monday to Sunday 8am – 4pm.
