Gas Safety

Anyone who carries out work on any gas appliances, pipework or LPG cylinders and regulators must be registered with GasSafe. When you contact a person or business to carry out any work on a gas installation you have a duty to take all reasonable steps to ensure that they are registered with GasSafe. This is easily done by checking their identification Card which is issued by GasSafe each year. You should check that:

  • The picture matches the person
  • The card is in date
  • The business name matches up
  • It has the GasSafe registered installer logo
  • It has their GasSafe registered number
  • The installer is registered to carry out the works you want them to undertake (detailed on the back of the card)

You can search for installers who can carry out the work you want them to on the GasSafe website

Workplaces

Employers have a responsibility to control the risks from their use of gas at work. This means that they must be able to demonstrate that they maintain:

  • Pipework and flues
  • LPG cylinders and regulators
  • Gas appliances

The easiest way to demonstrate that this maintenance has been undertaken is to have them inspected by a GasSafe registered engineer every year. This check will also highlight any problems with the gas installation which may lead to a risk of death or serious injury.

Further information regarding gas safety can be found on the HSE website and on the GasSafe website.
