Cockroaches

Cockroaches may infest housing or commercial premises, usually having been introduced via food, or from neighbouring infested premises. They are fast and virulent breeders and have been implicated in the transmission of salmonella and other bacterial diseases.

There are two common types: The German cockroach which is pale brown in colour and about 1cm in size, and the Oriental cockroach which is larger and has a brown shiny appearance.

Cockroaches thrive in warm, damp places – under cookers and in cupboards in kitchens, in airing cupboards and heating ducts. They usually cannot be seen during daylight, but are very active at night. They will scavenge on any food or rubbish with a high moisture content.

The Pest Control service can be contacted on 01234 718060.  Pest Control officers can use Sticky traps to indicate whether there is an infestation, and how bad it is.  Control is achieved by making potential foodstuffs inaccessible, thoroughly cleaning the affected area and applying a residual insecticide. The type of insecticide used will depend on the location of the infestation and the occupation of the building.
