Product Safety & Recalls

The Environmental Health & Trading Standards Service is responsible for enforcing the laws relating to the safety of goods sold in shops.

Surveys are normally conducted on particular product categories throughout the year and as a Section we also respond to complaints brought to us by consumers.

If warranted, we can arrange for some types of products to be tested by our analytical laboratory to determine if they comply with relevant standards. If they don't, the matter may be brought to the attention of the retailer and/or manufacturer and in serious cases prosecution may result.

Examples of common safety problems include:

  • Sharp edges or points on toys
  • Toys with small detachable parts which could choke a child
  • Badly designed or constructed electrical elements
  • Furniture with non-flame retardant filling

Where unsafe goods are found on sale, officers have the power to seize them or issue suspension notices, meaning they cannot be sold.

The Environmental Health & Trading Standards Service regularly gives advice to local producers and importers on safety matters.

An update list of all product recalls in the UK is available on the Trading Standards Institute website.
