Apply for Planning Permission

STEP 1: APPLY FOR PLANNING ADVICE

Applying for planning advice is not compulsory however potential issues can be discussed and, in most cases, resolved before a planning application is submitted. Planning advice can only be obtained in writing. For full information, and to apply, please click on the link below:

(If you choose to apply for planning advice you can go straight to STEP 4 once you have the relevant information. If you do not wish to take advantage of this service please follow STEPS 2 and 3).

 

STEP 2: CHECK LOCAL CONSTRAINTS & SITE HISTORY

If you do not want to apply for planning advice you can carry out your own planning searches. This will help you to prepare your planning application.

STEP 3: CHECK LOCAL POLICIES

It is advisable that you consider the policies relevant to your proposed development before you submit a planning application. If you applied for planning advice you should already know what policies are relevant to your proposed development, in which case click here to access the relevant policy documents. If you do not know what policies are relevant to your area, the link below can help you:

STEP 4: FILL IN AN APPLICATION FORM & SUBMIT THE CORRECT PLANS / DOCUMENTS

To apply for planning permission, listed building consent, advertisement consent and other forms of permission you can do ANY of the following:

 

>Print an application form by clicking on the 'Planning application forms & validation lists' link below, 

OR

>Fill in an application electronically via the Planning Portal Website

OR

>Collect an application form from the Customer Service Centre, Horne Lane, Bedford.

To make a payment please contact Customer Services on 01234 718068 or visit the Customer Services Centre, Horne Lane, Bedford, MK40 1SJ during opening hours as follows:

To Call Customer Services: 8.45am - 5.15pm Monday to Thursday, 8.45am - 5pm Friday.

To visit the Customer Services Centre, Horne Lane Bedford MK40 1SJ:  8.45am - 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.45am - 4.45pm Friday.

All cheque payments should be made payable to Bedford Borough Council.

 

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Standard planning applications can take between 6 - 8 weeks to determine (although this is not always the case). Not all applications will be heard at the Planning Committee meeting. Some applications will be dealt with by the allocated case officer with the agreement of the relevant planning team leaders and managers. The Planning Committee is held every month, usually on a Monday (except on Bank Holidays) at Borough Hall. If there are applications on the agenda that interest a lot of people the Planning Committee may be moved to a larger venue. So interested parties can attend the Planning Committee  it is held in the evenings at 6.30pm.
