Packed full of lesson plans, resources, activities and useful websites, this page is sure to have everything you need to begin your recycling topic. 

 

Bedford Borough Council recommends that schools carry out a full risk assessment before delivering any of these activities.

The lesson plans below have been created to support teachers of all age groups in delivering waste education sessions to their pupils.

Key Stage 1

  • Frankie Fly and Friends - An introduction to waste and recycling (Workshop Session).
  • The Three Little Pigs - Find out what The Three Little Pigs get up to in their new brick house and how they manage their waste. *NEW*

 

 

Key Stage 2

  • 'I Stink' - An introduction to waste disposal in Bedford. (Lower KS2 Workshop Session)
  • Bedford's Best Bins - A critical look at the way people manage their waste (Upper KS2 Workshop Session).
  • Waste Audit - Find out just how much waste your school is producing.
  • Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish - Based on the popular picture book, this session explores what happens to waste once it has been collected.  *NEW*
  • Recycled Art - A general introduction to recycling and a closer look at artists who use recycled materials to create pieces of art.  A group art project recreating a famous Kandinsky painting.  *NEW*

 

 

Key Stage 3

  • Wastenot Want Not- A closer look at waste issues in a town planning activity. (Workshop Session).
  • Recycle Games (zip file) - Some fun sporting activities using recycled items. Also suitable for Key Stage 2. 
  • Waste Audit - Find out just how much waste your school is producing.

Websites

  • Frankie FlyRecycle Now Schools' Site - A quick registration and you can access lots of great recycling resources.
  • Waste Buster - Lots of great resources and videos about a range of waste topics.
  • Ollie Recycles - A website for kids with lots of information about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  • Recycle Zone - Lots for children to do and a handy teacher section with loads of great resources and ideas for teaching about recycling. 
  • Waste Buster Kids Bin - Games and activities for children about waste.
  • Wallace the Worm - A tricky game about composting.  Make sure Wallace the Worm only eats the compostable items.
  • Regeneration Game - A game from Recycle Now which uses information from your postcode to test whether you know what can be recycled and where. 
  • Compost for Fun - A game from Recycle Now which allows you to walk around a house to choose items suitable for the compost bin.  Try and get the balance of greens and browns just right. 
  • Busta and Pong's Recycling Song - You guessed it...a song about recycling, although this one is pretty cool!
