Climate Change Fund

The Mayors Climate Change Fund, launched in 2010, was a grant funded scheme which provided 50% match-funding of between £5k and £20k for community group projects that contributed to a reduction in carbon emissions across Bedford Borough.

In total the fund supported 40 projects which collectively saved 380 tCO2 pa and £52,500 pa. The fund will also help generate an income of approximately £550,000 (over a 25 year period) as a result of helping some of the sites install Solar PV panels.

 

Here are some examples of the types of projects supported by the fund:

Air Source Heat Pumps

The Place Theatre at Bradgate Road installed 4 Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) units to replace their previous electric fan heaters.  For every unit of electricity used by the pumps, between 2 and 3 units of heat are produced: The Place Theatre - ASHP - Case Study.

 

Photovoltaic Solar Panels and Loft Insulation 

The first organisation to receive funding from the Mayor's Climate Change Fund was Pavenham Village Hall and Playing Field Charity who installed photovoltaic panels and loft insulation: Pavenham - Loft Insulation & PV - Case Study.                                                    

 

Photovoltaic Solar Panels at a School 

Scott Lower, Brickhill Lower and Beauchamp Middle Schools in Brickhill each had a 3.88 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system consisting of 21 panels each, installed on their roofs, with funding from the Mayor’s Climate Change Fund: Brickhill Schools-  Solar PV Panels - Case Study.

 

Low Energy Lighting 

Biddenham Upper School installed energy efficient T5 light fittings to replace T8 light fittings which will result in a reduction in electricity consumption for these light fittings by up to 50%: Biddenham - Low Energy Lighting - Case Study.
