In 2012 the Mayor Dave Hodgson signed a Water
Promise in partnership with Anglian Water Business to save
water and cut waste water by 20% by 2016.
Following the Promise being signed, the Council worked in
partnership with Anglian Water Business to produce a baseline
report to identify how much water was being used at each of the
Council sites, to identify where the Council was using most water
and to highlight where the greatest potential for water saving was
by benchmarking sites. The report which was completed has informed
the creation of the Council's Water Strategy.
The Water Strategy outlines the commitment the Council has made
to water conservation and states the actions that the Council has,
and will take, to reduce water use.
Some of the actions that have been completed to date
- Water Efficiency Audits were carried out by
Anglian Water Business across many of the Council’s sites to
identify areas where the buildings could save water. These audits
highlighted potential leaks, suggested whether the sites could save
money by switching tariff and Anglian Water Business also provided
free save a flush devices to install in toilet cisterns. The
recommendations made in the audits were used to develop the
Council’s Water Strategy.
- Tariff optimisation was carried out for all of
the Council sites by Anglian Water, finding approximately £2,500
worth of savings from switching to a better tariff.
- A leak at one of the Council’s changing rooms
was discovered and rectified, saving 583m2 water in
- Anglian Water Business now provide Bedford with
a consolidated bill compromising all of the Council's water bills.
This has meant that no paper bills are sent out to site and all
bills are sent electronically. This has resulted in the Council
being able to validate their own bills and also have a much better
view on what is being used and spent on water across the Council.
The council found that one site was being charged VAT incorrectly,
resulting in Anglian Water crediting back the site over
Many more actions which have been completed, planned or are
underway are outlined in the Water Strategy document.
