Support for birth relatives

Support for birth relatives

Adoption has a profound effect on all birth family members and we do what we can to ensure that these birth families are supported where possible.  We provide the following:

Letterbox Contact

We can support you with your Letterbox Contact Agreement, helping to write letters and facilitate communication with your child’s adoptive family.

Support Groups

We are currently looking to set up monthly drop-in support groups for birth relatives.  This could be an opportunity for birth relatives to socialise and assist each other in day-to-day challenges.  There would also be help with writing letters from out Letterbox Co-ordinator.

Adoption Contact Register

There is a National Adoption Contact Register run by the General Register Office, where the names of birth relatives can be placed to request contact with an adult adopted person. There is a fee to do this, so you’ll need to contact them directly.

You can write to them at:

Adoptions Section, Room DO9, Smedley Hydro, Trafalgar Road, Southport, PR8 2HH.

You can also visit the website https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

Our Adoption Team will be happy to talk to you to discuss your individual support needs.  For further information call us on 01234 718718 or email us at adoptionandfostering@bedford.gov.uk
