Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment

Purpose of Pharmacuetical Needs Assessments (PNA)

PNAs are  key documents for the NHS England as they  inform its decisions on applications to open new pharmacies and dispensing appliance contractor premises.  PNAs  inform commissioning of enhanced services from pharmacies by NHS England.  Enhanced services are services such as anti-coagulation monitoring, the provision of advice and support to residents and staff in care homes in connection with drugs and appliances, on demand availability of specialist drugs, and out of hours services.

Where it is deemed that producing a new PNA would be a disproportionate response, supplementary statements to the PNA will be produced, which will identify the nature of the changes to services.

Bedford Borough Pharmaceutical  Needs Assessment 2018

From 1 April 2013 the Bedford Borough Health and Wellbeing Board (HWB) became responsible for the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA), which had previously been published by NHS Bedfordshire. The Health and Social Care Act 2012 transferred responsibility for development and update of PNAs from Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to Health and Wellbeing Boards from 1 April 2013.  .

At the meeting of the Bedford Borough Health and Wellbeing Board on 14 March 2018 the Board  approved the Bedford Borough PNA 2018..   A full version of the PNA can be downloaded here.  An Executive Summary is also available.  An Easy Read version is also available to download.
