£3m Investment from sport and leisure management charity gives Bedford leisure facilities a further boost

Bedford residents hoping to get fit and active in 2014 will be excited to hear that from this weekend, experienced sport and leisure management charity, Fusion Lifestyle, will be taking over the operation of eight of the borough’s leisure facilities.

A newly agreed ten-year partnership between Bedford Borough Council and Fusion Lifestyle will see management of six leisure facilities, (Bedford International Athletic Stadium, the John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre, Mowsbury Golf and Squash Complex, Robinson Pool, Kempston Pool and Oasis Pool), and two outdoor activity centres at Kempston and Blue Peris in Snowdonia, handed over on 1st February.

To celebrate the handover of the operation of the facilities, Fusion Lifestyle will be holding an open weekend on 22nd and 23rd February at seven of the sites (excluding Blue Peris Outdoor Activity Centre) giving local residents the chance to try out some of the activities on offer.

As well as safeguarding the long-term future of the eight facilities, Fusion will also be investing over £3m into improving and upgrading the sites in the early stages of the contract, including £1.2million at the John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre.

Tim Mills, Director of Business Development for Fusion Lifestyle, said: “We are delighted to be taking on the management of Bedford Borough’s leisure facilities, and look forward to improving and extending the sport and leisure facilities and services available to the local community.

“With such a great range of activities to take part in, I’d urge everyone to go along to their local centre during the open weekend to find out more about what’s on offer to them.”

Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council said: “It’s great to be able to reassure residents of the borough that along with new capital investment in our Leisure sites these facilities will be maintained and operated to a high standard over the next 10 years by our new Leisure partner, Fusion.”

As part of the contract, Fusion Lifestyle will be launching a new website to help the public make the most of the facilities available. http://www.bedfordleisure.com/ (website goes live from 1st February) will host online timetables for each of the centres, allow you to book sessions online, and even sign up to become a member online.
