Bedford Bamberg Sports Festival 2012

The Bedford Bamberg 2012 Sports Festival took place over the weekend of 22 & 23 September 2012.  Local sport clubs in the following disciplines participated: Athletics, Badminton, Canoeing, Chess, Football (women's), Golf, Rowing, Shooting and Tennis.

The three Bamberg coaches carrying 156 people arrived at the Athletic Stadium at approximately 2.30pm on Friday 21 September after a long journey from Bamberg, which included an unexpected stop in Cambridge for a bit of sight seeing!  Apart from the people arriving by coach, a number made the journey by plane.

The weekend started off well with the planned visits by the Deputy Mayor of Bamberg and the Bamberg Councillors to the Shooting, tennis, rowing, canoeing and badminton clubs on Saturday.  The visits on Sunday to watch some fun activities on the Great River Ouse by the canoers started the day, and fortunately the rain later in the afternoon did not dampen the golfers and ladies footballers spirits and they continued with their games winning in both sports, so perhaps the British weather was in our favour after all!  Sunday ended with a visit to the Chess being played at the Harpur Suite.

Sunday evening at the Corn Exchange saw the competitors being presented with their trophies and medals, the occasion was also used to recognise the contribution to Twinning made by two people, Malcolm Chalmers formerly of Wootton Upper School and Eduard Fleischmann also a former teacher at Clavius Gymnasium in Bamberg.  Both men have been involved in the Bedford Bamberg Twinning for over 30 years; in particular the schools exchange which occurs yearly.

Bedford Borough Council would like to thank all the participants from Bedford and Bamberg who competed, refereed and supported the Sports Festival, not forgetting the volunteers who gave up their time to attend meetings over the last three years in preparation to deliver a successful event.

The overall scores for the weekend are below, with Bedford collecting the Overall Winners prize The Lord Luke Trophy.

The organising Committee of volunteers was supplemented by representatives of the Council and of Sport Bedford; who were jointly responsible for organising the festival.
