School Transport - Privilege Pass Scheme

The  Mainstream School Transport Team co-ordinates school transport for children entitled to free 'home to school' transport.  Details of the school transport policies can be found on the school transport policy page.

If your child is not eligible for free transport, the 'Privilege Pass Scheme' may be an option.  This is where you can buy a pass to travel on certain school bus services contracted to Bedford Borough Council.  Please note that:

  • Privilege passes cannot be used on public transport routes or train services
  • If your child needs to use a public transport bus or train, you should ring the operator directly
  • Spare seats on our bus services are very limited and cannot be guaranteed; you should not rely on the privilege scheme as the only way to transport your child to school
  • Privilege passes are only issued for one term at a time
  • The privilege pass cost for the 2016/2017 academic year is £150.00 per term
  • The cost for 2017/18 academic year has not yet been confirmed, please note it may significantly differ from the 2016/17 cost per term

We will only process privilege pass applications when all children, entitled to free transport, have been allocated to a bus.  This means that your application may not be processed until after the start of term and we cannot offer any refunds for transport you arrange whilst you wait to hear if your application is successful.

If your child is issued with a pass, we are still entitled to withdraw it.  This may  happen if:

  • The seat is needed for a child entitled to free transport
  • Your child has mis-behaved on the bus
  • If the bus service changes part way through the term

If the pass is withdrawn, you will be informed as soon as possible and given a refund on a pro-rata basis.

Before applying for a privilege pass, you should check if your child is entitled to free transport by calling the School Transport Entitlement Team on 01234 718004.

If your child is not eligible to free transport and you would like more information, please email the Mainstream Transport Team on Mainstream.Transport@bedford.gov.uk .  Please provide the following information in your email:

  • Your child's full name
  • Your home address
  • The name of the village/town you would like your child to board the bus
  • The school your child needs transport to
  • When you would require transport to start
