Pre-School Road Safety

Road incidents can happen to children in cars, walking in the street, cycling or out playing.

The Road Safety Team believe it is essential that children receive Road Safety training relevant to their level of development. This should be extended throughout their lives.

For pre school children we have some:-

Road Safety Activity Boxes

The boxes are loaned free of charge to encourage pre-school play group leaders to integrate road safety messages into play sessions.

The resources provide topic ideas aimed at developing perception, movement and behaviour patterns which will prepare pre-school children to become more aware of their own safety in the road environment.

The Road Safety Team have two types of  these boxes:-

The Road Safety Project Box was put together by the team.  It includes:-

  • A letter that can be copied and sent to parents prior to the child's involvement in road safety activities
  • A "Let's Begin Pack"  which is essentially an ideas pack developed for pre-school leaders to give suggestions on the way the resources in the box can be used
  • A "Together We Go Pack" which contains various activities and ideas for educational play
  • A "Child's Play" DVD
  • Line drawings that can be copied and then used for colouring to support the road safety messages in the activities undertaken
  • A school crossing patrol dressing up costume and a roadway play cloth which can be used in role play activities
  • Plus other toys with a road safety theme

The Street Feet Box which is more inclined to role play  includes:-

  • Tabards to represent such things as cars, buses, policeman etc.
  • Road mats
  • Road signs
  • Destination mats etc

The boxes complement each other and can be borrowed at the same time.

The boxes can be obtained on a loan basis at any time by contacting the Road Safety Team on: (01234) 228336. or email road.safety@bedford.gov.uk . There is no restriction on how long the boxes are loaned for but we would ask that they are not taken for an excessive amount of time as we have several other groups that may want to use them. Unfortunately we cannot deliver and collect the boxes so they will need to be picked up and returned to our office in Barkers Lane. Bedford.
