What is a travel plan?
A travel plan is a package of measures which aims to encourage
people to travel by sustainable modes. Travel plans can help to
deliver sustainable access to new and existing development and are
seen as an integral element of the planning process. However, it’s
never too late to start thinking about a travel plan, even for a
facility which has been around for many years.
A travel plan should look at long term management and be regularly
reviewed. For a large development, targets for achieving modal
shift should be set out along with measures which can be undertaken
if targets are not reached. Whilst targets may not be appropriate
for smaller facilities, there are many innovative ways of reducing
the number of single occupancy car journeys to a site.
One of the easiest ways of helping people to think about how they
travel is to provide them with up to date relevant information;
this is where a travel plan coordinator can play a vital role.
Travel plans are just one way of encouraging people to change their
travel behaviour; other measures include,
- Improving and expanding cycle storage
- Providing pool vehicles and
- Promoting car sharing
- Installing shower facilities
- Providing free loans for cycle and
season ticket purchase
We are working with a number of organisations to get travel
plans in place; these include Bedford Hospital, Bedford
College, schools and local developers. The
Bedford Stations Travel Plan was adopted in March 2011 by Bedford
Borough Council and its partners. For more
